Alex had spent months formulating a plan: he was going to propose on New Year’s Eve, 2023, in Vienna. He had told Valerie’s parents, shared his plans with three of Valerie’s bridesmaids, and even showed his father the ring ahead of time. Then, opportunity got in the way.

On the day after Christmas, Valerie and Alex had plans to go to Fortress Hohensalzburg, a medieval castle that sits at one of Salzburg’s highest points, offering breathtaking views of the city and surrounding region. With a beautiful sunset surrounding them, most of the tourists gone, an engagement ring burning a hole in Alex’s pocket, and Valerie’s cheerful beauty in front of him…Alex just could not wait any longer! In an isolated hideaway on the fortress’ terrace, Alex knelt on one knee and popped the question. Valerie immediately said yes!! 

After nicely asking a few strangers to take engagement photos of the couple, Alex and Valerie descended the mountain. With their phone service restored, they called each of their families to share the happy news. Then they wandered over to the Hotel Sacher to celebrate with champagne and Sachertorte. To wrap up the night, they met up with Alex’s family to celebrate late into the evening – It was a perfect end to a perfect day.
